In this contemporary era, the large exposure to various junk food has made people more prone to tooth-decay problems. Decayed cavity problems are common in individuals of all ages, from kids to the elderly.

There are various kinds of filling dentistry methods, but the tooth-colored filling is the most preferred one. In a society with people focused on having white and bright teeth that resemble natural teeth, dental fillings restore the tooth to its original shape and function.

What are Tooth-colored Fillings?

Tooth-colored or white fillings or composites are natural-looking fillings in comparison to other traditional amalgam fillings. This is a composite or mixture containing glass or quartz particles, synthetic, resin, and binding ingredients. These fillings blend very well with the remaining tooth structure.

The procedural steps involved are as follows:

  • Numb the area using a local anesthetic.
  • Use a drill or an air abrasion instrument or any such instruments, based on dentists’ preference, to remove the decayed area.
  • A probe test is then done to ensure the complete removal of the decay.
  • Prepare the filling space is by cleaning the cavity of bacteria and debris.
  • Space needs to be dry before filling.
  • In case the decay is near the root, a liner made of glass ionomer composite resin or any other material is put to protect the nerve.
  • The tooth-colored material is filled in layers.
  • After the multi-layer filling, a special light that cures or hardens every layer is applied.
  • The material or extra composite is shaped and polished to get the desired result.

  • Aesthetics -The shade/color blends closely with the original tooth structure making it very natural looking.
  • Tooth Structure Bonding – The composite fillings micro-mechanically bond to the tooth structure, providing required rigidity and support to the tooth.
  • Versatility – Apart from providing dental restoration to decayed teeth, the fillings can be used to repair chipped, broken, or worn teeth.
  • Tooth Sparing – Compared to other amalgam fillings, less tooth structure is removed while removing decay and filling.

  • Lack of Durability – Wears out sooner than other amalgam fillings. It tends to break more easily under the pressure of chewing.
  • Longer procedure time –Takes longer time for the whole filling process compared to other kinds of fillings.
  • Additional Visits –As it tends to wear out soon, the number of regular check-ups needed is more.
  • Expense –More expensive compared to any other filling, although less than gold filling. It can cost almost twice the price of others.

Despite the disadvantages, the benefits are more considered, making it the most preferred kind of filling used for any such relatable issues.
